Il Governo degli Stati Uniti d'America emette ogni anno 55.000 "Green Card" attraverso il programma "Diversity Immigrant", noto comunemente come "Lotteria Green Card". I partecipanti sono selezionati a sorte mediante estrazione generata al computer. Se selezionato, il richiedente principale, il coniuge e tutti i figli non sposati di età inferiore ai 21 anni avranno la possibilità di richiedere lo status di residente permanente negli Stati Uniti d'America.
